Joe Biden blasted Donald Trump as a “convicted felon” who is seeking the US presidency for the first time in history, in a dramatic escalation of his attacks on his rival in November’s election.
Mr Biden was using the description for the first time since Mr Trump was convicted by a New York jury of covering up hush money payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels in a historic verdict.
“Folks, the campaign entered uncharted territory,” Mr Biden told donors in Connecticut. “For the first time in American history a former president that is a convicted felon is now seeking the office of the presidency.”
Mr Biden said Trump’s attacks on the US justice system, with the Republican former president making unsupported allegations that the case was rigged, were more dangerous still.
“As disturbing as that is, more damaging is the all-out assault Donald Trump is making on the American system of justice,” Mr Biden said.
The Democratic incumbent said Mr Trump, whom he beat in the 2020 election, would pose a greater threat if he wins a second term.
“Something snapped in this guy for real” after 2020, said Mr Biden. “It’s literally driving him crazy.”
Mr Biden also criticised Mr Trump for suggesting that sending him to prison could prove a “breaking point” for his supporters — a warning that will fuel concerns of political violence around the presidential election on November 5.
“He says if he loses there will be a bloodbath in America. What kind of man is this?” Mr Biden told supporters.
STORMY URGES MELANIA TO DUMP TRUMP
Stormy Daniels is urging Melania Trump to leave her husband following his conviction in his hush money trial.
The former adult film star, who alleged she had an affair with the billionaire just a year into his marriage with former model Melania, claimed Mr Trump was “abusive” and “a criminal’.
Ms Daniels told The Mirror that Melania needed to divorce her husband.
“It’s been proven he is abusive; he was found liable for sexual assault and tax fraud and is now a criminal. He’s neither Teflon Don nor Teflon Con anymore.”
Ms Daniels also speculated as to why Melania and Mr Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, were not seen in court, saying both women likely chose to prioritise the “safety and privacy” of their children over attending the trial.
The mother-of-one said: “I would not want to expose my children to that dangerous environment.
“And Melania and Ivanka are both parents, they are mothers who have younger children, and that would be my reason.
“You know, if it was the other way around, even if I wanted to support my spouse or my family member, I would choose the safety and privacy of my child over attending court.”
TRUMP WANTS SUPREME COURT TO INTERVENE
Donald Trump wants the United States Supreme Court to intervene prior to his sentencing.
The former president will be sentenced on July 11 after he was last week convicted of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to Ms Daniels, silencing her claim of an affair before the 2016 election.
Mr Trump took to his Truth Social platform to rant that the highest American court should decide his fate, and not his ‘fascist’ opponents.
Mr Trump posted: “The ‘Sentencing’ for not having done anything wrong will be, conveniently for the Fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention.”
“A Radical Left Soros backed D.A., who ran on a platform of ‘I will get Trump,’ reporting to an ‘Acting’ Local Judge, appointed by the Democrats, who is HIGHLY CONFLICTED, will make a decision which will determine the future of our Nation? The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!”
Mr Trump appointed three of the six current justices named by Republican presidents: Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
The sentencing, which will happen in Manhattan, is scheduled just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where his party would officially designate him as presidential candidate for a third consecutive time.
It came as Mr Trump’s son, Eric, told US media that his father has raised millions in campaign funds since the guilty verdict.
TRUMP ‘OKAY’ WITH GOING TO PRISON
Donald Trump has claimed he is “okay” with going to prison but said his criminal trial has been “very hard” on his wife Melania.
In an interview with Fox News, Mr Trump was asked about potential punishments including a prison term or house arrest and said: “I’m okay with it.”
But the 77-year-old appeared to suggest his supporters would cause havoc if he was locked up.
“I’m not sure the public would stand for it,” he said.
“I think it would be tough for the public to take… At a certain point, there’s a breaking point.”
Early in the six-week trial, Mr Trump privately complained about a lack of allies and relatives attending the Manhattan Criminal Court to support him, as the jury heard intimate evidence from Ms Daniels about their one-night fling in 2006.
Multiple witnesses also testified about former Playboy model Karen McDougal’s claim that she and Mr Trump had a 10-month sexual affair in 2006 and 2007 – just months after he had married Melania and she had given birth to their son Barron.
Melania did not make an appearance during the trial, nor did she emerge after Mr Trump became the first US president in history to be convicted of a crime last week.
She had similarly refused to join him on the campaign trail since he announced his re-election bid.
Speaking on Fox News on Sunday (local time), Mr Trump said it was “very hard for her”.
“I mean, she’s fine. But it’s … you know, she has to read all this c**p,” he said.
“I have a wonderful wife who has to listen to this stuff all the time. They do that for this reason. They do that — all these salacious names that they put in of these people, and I’m not even allowed to defend myself because of the gag order.”
“In many ways, it’s tougher on my family than it is on me.”
