Disturbing footage has captured a young child playing near the murky waters of Cahills Crossing with multiple crocodiles seen lurking nearby – prompting one tour guide to say it’s “only a matter of time” before someone gets hurt.
The video, posted to Instagram on Wednesday by tour company Cyaround Australia Tours, showed several adults and kids hanging around the water of the infamous crossing.
While some members of the group kept their distance from the water’s edge, a woman and a child decided to hop across some rocks to cast a fishing line.
The pair’s actions shocked a man, who caught the moment on his phone camera.
“What is this kid doing?” the man says.
“There is fricken crocs everywhere.”
Sure enough, multiple crocodiles can be seen a short distance away, observing the visiting crowd.
The company took to social media to bemoan the slack behaviour.
“This family was literally having a picnic on the road with the kids constantly on the water's edge and absolutely zero crocodile sense,” the statement read.
“At this time there was close to 10 visible, large crocs within 50 metres of them and probably another 25 crocs we couldn’t see at the time.”
The company warned that such behaviour would one day result in death.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again but it is only a matter of time until we have another fatality here and it will be witnessed by hundreds of people.”
The discussion of crocodile awareness has been more prevalent since the tragic death of Dr David Hogbin, who was killed in a crocodile attack in North Queensland earlier this month.
A crocodile guide from North Queensland, David White, weighed in on the distressing footage out of the Northern Territory.
“Honestly, people have totally lost their perspective of the wild,” he said.
“This is totally insane and unacceptable on all levels. National parks, child welfare, cops should all be out there fining these people.”
