A protester cracked an egg on United Australia Party leader Craig Kelly’s head on Friday, in scenes reminiscent of “egg boy” Will Connolly doling out the same treatment to former right wing senator Fraser Anning.

The incident occurred at a United Australia Party “rally against government overreach” and barbecue at Fawkner Park in South Yarra.

Victoria Police said it was investigating the incident.

In a statement, police said: “It was understood two women were involved in an incident where eggs were smashed onto the man’s head at Fawkner Park about 1.25pm, before running to a vehicle which was believed to be waiting nearby.”

“The man, from NSW, was not injured,” the statement said.

“A witness on a pushbike followed the women, parking his bike in front of the car.

“It is alleged the male driver ran over the cyclist’s foot. He sustained minor injuries.

“The cyclist then followed the vehicle, which stopped nearby on Toorak Road. The driver gave his details to the cyclist.

“The driver and two women then left the scene in the vehicle.

“Investigations into the identity of those involved remain ongoing.”

Video of the attack against Mr Kelly circulated on social media on Friday afternoon, with the middle-aged woman yelling at the member for Hughes “stop hanging out with Nazis, stop hanging out with Nazis”.

“You’re an anti-Semite, you’re a Nazi lover,” the protester said.

“You’re a Nazi loving piece of sh-t.”

Mr Kelly, surrounded by United Australian Party supporters, said the woman was a “disgrace to our democracy”.

Other comments he made could not be heard over the woman’s repeated allegations about his political affiliations.

Mr Kelly, a conservative former Liberal party member is not a Nazi, and has previously apologised for making an “over the top” comparison of the Victorian government’s lockdown policies to the kind of thing “you’d expect to see in Nazi Germany”.

Mr Kelly’s next stop on the campaign trail is an event in Adelaide on Sunday.
