Bambini Child Care services remain closed

Multiple Bambini Child Care centres remain shut months after authorities issued an Emergency Action Notice, closing all locations for assessments following the death of an infant.

Heavy police presence after child dies at Melbourne daycare centre

Several daycare centres ordered to close for safety checks following the tragic death of a baby in Melbourne in late February remain shut more than three months after authorities intervened.

The Department of Education confirmed that most of the 56 centres operating under the Bambini Family Day Care Services group have reopened, but several had not yet met requirements and remain shut.

It comes after emergency notices were served to all the group’s family centres across the state, ordering compliance and sleep risk assessments after a child died at a centre in Melbourne’s west in February.

Emergency service crews were called to a residence on Balinga Drive, Skye, where the daycare was located, following reports of a child’s death.

A neighbour reportedly heard a loud scream moments before first responders arrived at the childcare centre in Melbourne’s southeast.

Police and paramedics attending the scene at Irani’s Family Daycare Centre found the infant deceased.

Victoria Police confirmed the death was non-suspicious and the matter had been referred to the coroner.

It’s understood the case had also been referred to WorkSafe for further investigation.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said: “The death of any child is a tragedy, and our thoughts are with their family and community in this difficult time”.

“As a precaution, Victoria’s early childhood regulator issued an Emergency Action Notice to Bambini Child Care requiring the service to complete sleep and rest risk assessments, check compliance with sleeping arrangements, and stop providing family day care until deemed compliant.

“Almost all of the premises have been assessed as able to reopen to families. The regulator continues to work with Bambini to assess and confirm compliance.”

The centres that remain closed have no opening dates authorised.
