Heavy police presence after child dies at Melbourne daycare centre

A neighbour reportedly heard a loud scream in the minutes before emergency services arrived to find an infant dead at a childcare centre in Melbourne’s southeast on Wednesday afternoon.

Police and paramedics were called to Irani’s Family Daycare Centre on Balinga Drive, Skye about 2pm to reports of the child’s death.

A large police presence followed, with multiple vehicles spotted on the scene, but they have since declared the tragedy as non-suspicious.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of an infant at a family day care facility in Skye,” a statement read.

“An investigation into the circumstances is ongoing but the death is not being treated as suspicious.”

The family day care centre has glowing reviews online and was either meeting or exceeding National Quality Standards (NQS) in all categories with the overall rating “exceeding standards”.

The NQS rates daycares in seven categories; educational program and practice, children’s health and safety, Physical environment, staffing arrangements, relationships with children, collaborative partnerships with families and communities, and governance and leadership.

The NQS said Irani’s was “meeting” standards in children’s health and safety.

The day care has a 4.8 star rating out of 5, with reviewers praising Irani and how the “reliable and a great carer” runs her business.

“I couldn’t say enough good things.. where to begin,” one reviewer said. “(My child) has really thrived in Irani’s care with the love, exposure & education she’s provided her.”

The age of the child that died, or the circumstances surrounding its death are yet to be revealed, the daycare centre is listed as taking care of children from the ages of two months to five years however.

The centre is run out of the woman’s home but is still a fully regulated and licenced facility that is operated under the umbrella of Bambini Child Care Services.

Family daycare centres are held in private homes and look after smaller groups of children than traditional childcare centres.

Worksafe said on Wednesday afternoon that they were looking into the infant’s death.

“Inspectors and investigators are responding,” they said.
