Alleged stabbing at workers camp near Katherine

A Queenslander accused of stabbing fellow workers with a steak knife in a fly-in-fly-out work camp has been released on bail.

Changbao Yan, 51, faced Katherine Local Court on Monday charged with recklessly endangering serious harm over an alleged knife-fight in a Katherine work camp.

Confronting footage emerged allegedly showing the Friday morning incident at Victoria Village, a purpose-built accommodation facility for fly-in fly-out workers and government personnel about 40km from Katherine.

Police allege two people were injured after the argument broke out between Yan and another man on December 16.

Police said one alleged victim was left with multiple injuries, while an intervening bystander was left with a serious wound to his leg.

The footage, which appears to be a recording taken on a mobile phone of CCTV, showed one man standing over another, appearing to kick him, before a bystander tries to intervene.

The bystander then falls to the ground and crawls away from the scuffle after suffering what is understood to be a stab wound to his leg.

Shortly after, the man who is believed to have instigated the fight falls over and is set upon by the other man involved in the altercation.

Shrieking and cries for help can be heard as the larger man is allegedly stabbed with what is understood to be a steak knife.

He is understood to have suffered a stab wound to his back, multiple stab wounds to his leg and was bleeding profusely when paramedics arrived.

The alleged attack continues for about 10 seconds before witnesses try to separate the pair.

A worker staying at another camp told the NT News he believed the two men had a “run-in” before the incident.

“Everybody at the camp has all heard about it,” he said.

“It’s a pretty major thing.

“They’re pretty long blades.”

Police received reports of the incident about 5.30am Friday before officers and paramedics attended.

The incident occurred at Victoria Village, a workers accommodation facility about 40km from Katherine.

Yan was arrested and his alleged victims were taken to Katherine Hospital in a stable condition.

The three men were believed to be known to each other but their relationship is not known.

On Monday Yan was granted a $10,000 bail to return to a Queensland home.

The 51-year-old’s matter will return to court on February 6, 2023 for a plea or mention.

Detective Sergeant Byron May said investigations were in their early stages and urged anyone with information who hasn’t contacted police to do so quoting reference number 101204129.

Victoria Village would not comment on the incident.
