Four people are in police custody after a crash involving a suspected stolen vehicle, which resulted in debris and two mangled wrecks being scattered along the road next to Townsville Shopping Centre.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said emergency services were called to the intersection of Alfred Street and Elizabeth Street following reports of a crash involving a Toyota HiLux and a Toyota Corolla, at around 6.45pm on Thursday.

“Police have taken four people into custody following a crash in Aitkenvale tonight,” the spokeswoman said

“The occupants of the HiLux, believed to be juveniles, fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival. Police located four people shortly after and took them into custody.

“The occupants of the Corolla, a 19-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were assessed by emergency services but did not require transport to hospital.”

She said initial investigations suggested that the HiLux was stolen, and investigations were ongoing.

A grey Toyota Corolla sedan suffered significant damage to the front end, while a black Toyota HiLux had sustained damage on both sides of its body, including broken windows, flat tyres, and caved in doors on the driver’s side.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said there were no patients requiring treatment.
