Northern Queensland defence personnel, veterans and their families have been armed with fishing rods and nets in the coming days – helping to raise much needed funds for Legacy.

The 3rd Brigade Legacy Fishing Competition, hosted by the 3rd Combat Engineers Regiment (3CER) starts today and goes until Monday, and is open to all North Queensland Defence members, Veterans, James Cook University, Emergency Services, and family members to wet a line and support Legacy.

The event hooks in with Legacy Appeal week which start on Monday September 2.

3CER commander Lieutenant Colonel Nick Trotter said hundreds had already registered for the competition which supported a great cause and also had great prizes on offer.

“The competition raises money for Legacy in North Queensland and the wonderful work that they do,” he said.

“North Queensland’s such a unique and fantastic environment to soldier in and fishing is something that families can do, kids can do, and it brings the community together.”

He said the competition ran over four days and participants could drop a line anywhere from Cairns down to Airlie Beach, both inland and offshore and there was also an international component.

“This year, we have people in Papua New Guinea and in other parts of the world that have been able to enter.”

Prizes include those for the biggest fish, smallest fish, best non-fish and best fishing photo.

“There’s almost $10,000 worth of prizes on offer, mostly from our wonderful sponsors and that’s everything from fishing equipment, fishing rods and lots of things to do with fishing.”

He said last year the event raise $20,000 for Legacy and they were hoping to raise more this time.

“Legacy is an incredible organisation. It does so much to support the families of our fallen so if you see, legacy stands out and about, please dig deep.”

Northern Queensland Legacy president Shane Grist said the 3rd Brigade fishing competition was a fantastic way to help kick off Legacy Week Appeal next Monday and they were hoping to raise $100,000 for the charity.

“Legacy will be set up at all the major shopping centres in the city and also at Bowen, Charters Towers, and Ingham, so come on in and get badges or your bears.

“All the funds raised through the fishing competition and the appeals week, and any money that’s donated to Legacy goes towards supporting the widows and children of the fallen or those who have given their health for the defence of the country.

“The money raised through Legacy is kept within the region that it is donated.”
