The opening of arguably Townsville’s best gym is about to be celebrated with free sessions in booty building, infra-red saunas and specially chilled ice baths.

Strand Fitness has acquired the former Zoo Health and Fitness centre in Woolcock St, Garbutt, and will mark its official opening as Strand Fitness Central on Saturday after spending a further $1m on its fit-out and investing that much again on equipment.

Features include the Booty Room, where you can “build” your glutes, The Oasis: Fire & Ice recovery room where you can sweat and chill in saunas and spas and The Haven, an area of mediation zones and massage chairs.

There is also the latest in squat machines and belted hip thrusters from the US, Italy and Netherlands, a CrossFit box, swimming pool and The Attic boxing training centre.

“It’s top of the line, no expense spared. I had to buy everything new and I sourced the best from around the world,” Strand Fitness owner Dean Bodle said.

It’s been a combination of the hustle for the muscle and having a good banker.

Mr Bodle said he was enticed into a “very good deal” to buy the gym property for $3m last year when it had sold for $5m some years ago.

His bank, Suncorp, helped, having been with him from the start 13 years ago when he began as an independent personal trainer at the very same centre in Garbutt when it traded as the Beach House.

At 3000sq m under roof and on an 8400sq m property, it is now the largest of three Strand Fitness centres in Townsville, including a large health hub in Flinders St and a new gym in North Shore, all employing about 100 people.

Further work is to be undertaken on the Garbutt property to provide an expanded carparking area on the site of the current beach volley ball court.

Mr Bodle said he was proud to be a locally owned and operated fitness business providing Townsville people with a world class experience in non-judgmental environments.

Strand Fitness supports a host of other businesses from swim schools to nutritionists, remedial massage carers, exercise physiologists, cafe operators and independent personal trainers.

They also host sports clubs’ training sessions, including the Townsville Fire, and rehab groups, and recently supported the 24 Hours of Heroes charity event.
