Parents and carers are being reminded to keep an eye on their children this Christmas season, with toys making way for hazards.
Townsville Hospital and Health Service has already seen 180 children pass through the emergency department this year, after inserting objects into their ears, noses and mouths.
Medical director children’s services Dr Jason Yates said it’s a situation he sees too much.
“It’s a common scenario, ranging from mildly concerning to quite serious,” Dr Yates said.
Dr Yates said he frequently sees objects such as screws, bolts, marbles, lego bricks, beads and stickers.
“These smaller items can become easily lodged and cause blockages or other complications,” Dr Yates said.
Dr Yates said he encourages parents to take the necessary steps to ensure their child has a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
“Check toys carefully before giving them to young children and be mindful of the recommended age range – it’s there for a reason,” Dr Yates said.
“A helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads should be part of a package with any bike, scooter, or skateboard.”
“We want everyone to have a wonderful Christmas, and we certainly don’t want anyone to create a ‘memorable’ Christmas for all the wrong reasons.”
Locals are recommended to speak with a registered nurse on 13 43 25 84, or to visit a general practitioner for advice.
In the event of an emergency, always call triple-0.
