The Olympic spirit came to town for this year’s Northern Queensland Legacy Christmas function.

Legacy beneficiaries dressed in their finest Olympic outfits and medals for the early Christmas celebration with ADF and Legacy corporate partners in attendance including guest speaker Brigadier Dave McCammon, Wing Commander Luke Headley and Brigadier Ben McLennan.

Brigadier McCammon said there was no better place to be a soldier than in Townsville and that the city would soon boast the largest Veteran community in the country.

“We couldn’t do the things we do without the support we get from the Townsville community, and a big part of that is the support our veterans get.

“A huge part of the support our veterans get is what Legacy provides, and it has been doing that since WWI, and it’s such an amazing charity.”

Northern Legacy CEO Nicole Hayes said the event was Olympic-themed this year, with beneficiaries coming from Townsville and Charters Towers, enabling them to connect with each other.

“This is a really important event every year for our ladies to connect, to celebrate Christmas and to celebrate the end of the year.

“For some ladies, it might be the only Christmas they have with friends and family. This is what Legacy is about - building community and having each other’s backs.”

She said it was important for the community to keep supporting Legacy.

Legacy is here to look after people in our local community. We look after those who have given, who have lost a loved one, who has given their life or their health in defence of our nation.”

She said the beneficiaries always came dressed for the occasion, and this year’s event was no exception.

“The ladies get into the theme, and this is going to be a great Olympic Games. It’ll rival Paris 2024.”
