Massive croc spotted from family’s backyard in Cordelia, near Ingham

A hulking croc estimated at 3.6m in length has been snapped basking just a few metres from a family’s backyard in North Queensland.

A hulking croc estimated at 3.6m in length has been snapped basking just a few metres from a family’s backyard in North Queensland.

Cordelia resident Craig Hartman said he spotted the big croc at the rear of their house by the Herbert River on Monday.

“I would estimate it to be maybe 3.6m long but didn’t want to get too close to measure,” he said.

It comes after a 3.8m problem croc was captured and removed from the Herbert River at Cordelia by wildlife officers from the Department of Environment and Science (DES) last year.

The large saltie had become increasingly aggressive and was approaching people at the riverbank.

It was captured and transported to a DES holding facility in Townsville last February.

Members of the public are encouraged to report crocodile sightings as soon as possible through the QWildlife app or by calling 1300 130 372. DES investigates all reports it receives.
