Detailed concept designs for the new Townsville Police Academy have been freshly released, as the government locks in $100 million in allocated funding for the new cutting-edge facility.

The academy will be situated within the new Kirwan police precinct at the former 1300Smiles site alongside the new Kirwan police station and Townsville PoliceLink centre.

It will replace the current Townsville Police Academy located in Belgian Gardens and include purpose-built and flexible training facilities that provide specialist scenario-based training for police to better protect vulnerable victims.

Premier Steven Miles said the academy was an important part of the government’s community safety plan.

“We will need to train hundreds more police and we want to train them in Townsville,” he said.

“It’s the right time, especially with the Queensland Police Service in the midst of its biggest-ever recruitment campaign.”

Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said the facility would help them “future-proof” policing in North Queensland.

“This is an important project for the Queensland Police and the local community in Townsville,” he said.

“It will provide state-of-the-art training facilities and equipment for our officers and recruits as well as enhancing our policing footprint in Kirwan.”

It’s anticipated that the construction program will be progressed over a four-year period.
