A  TOWNSVILLE coffee shop owner is joining the no plastic fight, creating her own line of rainbow stainless steel straws, lippy lids and keep cups.

Annie Nguyen, 32, owns Annee’s Caphe Sua Da shop, a Vietnamese coffee shop at Otto’s Market in Currajong.

She said it was hard to ditch plastic straws as they had become central to her branding.

“I’ve been wanting to ditch the straw for two years but it’s been a major part of my logo, the ‘A’ and the pink straw,” Ms Nguyen said.

“For a small business to change from plastic straws to paper straws is costly. But I’m quite conscious of the effect … we go through several thousand straws each week.”

Ms Nguyen said her environmentally-aware customers inspired the change.

“Being near the Great Barrier Reef, I’ve had a lot of pressure,” she said.

Ms Nguyen’s stores have introduced biodegradable lids and cups as well as rainbow stainless steel straws. She’s also working on a design for reusable glass keep cups.
