A new children’s book based on life in the outback has been released by local author and illustrator Norah Kersh.
Ms Kersh, who has published several books about outback events such as bushfires and rodeos, said her latest book ‘Mostly Sunny Elsewhere’ was influenced by the 2019 Townsville floods.
“When the flood came it rained for ten days without stopping following a very dry season,” she said.
“It’s still very fresh in the minds of people who endured it. It was a tough time for lots of people and I wanted to address that in the book, in a way that children can understand.”
Having loved painting and drawing all her live and growing up on cattle stations across North and North-West Queensland, Ms Kersh said she created the books to fill a gap in the topics of children’s picture books.
“When my children were small, there was a lack of books that they could relate to,” she said.
“I had the opportunity to start writing about station children and kids in the outback.”
Ms Kersch said she wanted to make a book about an important topic for many children living in rural regions.
“I am not avoiding the difficulty and the struggle for station families but showing it in a way they can understand and be prepared for.”
Norah Kersch’s new childrens book ‘Mostly Sunny Elsewhere’ is available to purchase at Mary Who? Bookshop and Donohues.
