A Top End park is set to become more accessible with the Territory government releasing a tender to improve disability access with a hoist installation and more.
The tender is for Edith Falls in Nitmiluk National Park – located 60km northeast of Katherine – to improve disability access in the lower plunge pool.
The purpose of the hoist is to allow wheelchair users to safely access the plunge pool and is designed to fit in with the natural environment, according to a statement from the Territory government.
Other plans also include upgrading the existing pathway to allow better access to the plunge pool.
The tender is part of a NT Parks Masterplan 2023-53, with the Lawler Labor government investing $70 million into Territory parks since 2016.
Tourism and Hospitality minister Joel Bowden said the government wanted to showcase the Territory as an inclusive and accessible destination to all visitors.
“Accessible tourism initiatives ensure tourist attractions are accessible to all regardless of their physical limitations, disabilities or age,” he said.
Parks and Rangers minister and Arnhem MLA Selena Uibo said the Lawler government would support more accessibility in parks.
“Attractions, experience and facilities have successfully grown and improved in Nitmiluk National Park, and it continues to be one of the most popular destinations for tourists and Territorians alike,” she said.
