Police have found a pair of Taminmin College students who went missing while on a school trip in Jabiru on Thursday safe and well.

The boy and girl, both aged 15, were reported missing at 9.30pm, Thursday, while on a camping trip to the outskirts of Jabiru, prompting a 16-hour search by the school and police.

School staff searched the immediate area and nearby town without success, until police joined the search finding the students shortly before 2pm on Friday.

The disappearance sparked immediate worry from families and the wider school community with the grandmother of the young girl begging for her to come home.

Kerrie Elmer said her granddaughter had a caring heart and loved animals, urging the Year 10 student to return.

“Come home ... please we all love you,” she wrote on Facebook.

In a letter to the Taminmin College community on Friday morning, principal John Harris said the rest of the class had returned home safely.

“Police have been notified and are working with the families to find the two missing students and return them home,” he said.

“The other students who attended the camp have returned to the school and will be supported by staff and the school’s counsellor.

“Our school is working with the families of the missing students and also acknowledge(s) this incident may be distressing to others, so please reach out to me if you feel your child/ren needs further support.”

Temperatures in the Top End were set to reach 32 degrees on Friday and as high as 34 degrees on Saturday.

MySchool data reveals Taminmin College had 1137 students enrolled in 2022.

The Humpty Doo school caters for students between years 7 and 12 as well as those with special needs.

Jabiru lies on the outskirts of Kakadu National Park about 250km east of Darwin.
