The 2024 Archibald Prize exhibition arrives in the Territory

A prestigious portrait exhibition has landed in the Territory, featuring works from local artists who are contributing to an “amazing display of humanity”.

Opening on Thursday, the 2024 Archibald Exhibition will be open to Alice Springs residents to see at the Araluen Arts Centre.

It is the first time in the portrait competition’s 100-year history it has visited Alice Springs.

Centre director Felicity Green said getting the exhibition to the Red Centre capital required four years of negotiations with the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

“Finally, it’s here and we’re extremely excited to be exposing our community to this amazing display of humanity,” she said.

Of the 57 portraits on display, two of the artists call the Territory home, while another hails from the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in South Australia.

Adrian Jangala Robertson, from Yuendumu, has a portrait of his sister in the exhibition, while Arrernte and Kalkadoon artist Thea Anamara Perkins has a painting of her mum Hetti Perkins on display.

From the APY Lands, Robert Fielding has a portrait of senior Pitjantjatjara Elder Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin on display.

The local artists are featured in the same exhibition which shows the Archibald Prize winning portrait of Tim Winton, as well as the Packing Room Prize winning portrait of Territory rapper Baker Boy.

Also featuring is the work of upcoming Alice Springs artists, as part of the “young Archies”.

“I was really sad about the young kids who put all their effort in and maybe weren’t going to have their work shown, so my staff were working tirelessly to display all of the all of the entries,” she said.

They would be displayed with other works, she said.

In March, it was announced the Archibald Prize was coming to Alice Springs, in what Territory arts minister Jinson Charles called “a once-in-a-generation opportunity”.

Ms Green said the exhibition opened to the public on Thursday, April 24 and would run until June 15.

Tickets for exhibition can be purchased from the Araluen Arts Centre box office or online.
