Six more street art murals to come to Darwin’s streets

Six sites across Darwin will receive an artistic facelift, following news that the City’s funding under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) has been successful

Six sites across Darwin will receive an artistic facelift, following news that the City’s funding under the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) has been successful.

The BBRF is a Federal Government initiative providing dollar for dollar funding for regional projects.

Darwin council applied for funding to support local and emerging mural artists develop skills and capacity to deliver a series of murals across the city to a value of $90,000.

Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said he was “delighted to support our local and emerging artists” through the Street to Art project.

“This project is unique — it supports artists to grow and develop their skills through mentorship programs and workshops and provides opportunities to deliver art work that everyone in our community can enjoy,” he said.

General Manager, Community and Regulation at City of Darwin Polly Banks the Street to Art program was one well suited to the outdoor nature of a Darwin lifestyle.

“The Street to Art project will see six sites across Darwin receive a major facelift, with artwork that will add vibrancy to our public spaces as well as reflecting our unique and multicultural lifestyle.”

As part of the project Larrakia Nation will identify two emerging indigenous artists to create 2 murals on the Mindil Beach Sound Shell.

The ‘Street to Art’ project includes workshops and events to assist mural artists to deliver commissioned art projects in public spaces.
