TERRITORY students have tested their technological skills on the national stage at the RoboCup Junior 2018 Australian National Championships.

RoboCup Junior is an educational initiative encouraging primary and secondary school students to participate in science, technology, engineering and maths activities through robotics.

Three NT teams entered the competition in Melbourne. Teammates Peter Susanto, 11, and Ayden Bottos, 12, represented the Darwin Enrichment Centre, and competed in the Open Rescue Maze Challenge, the highest level of the rescue challenges.

Peter and Ayden constructed their robot using EV3 Mindstorms Lego. They learned basic coding and algorithms to program their robot to traverse and navigate a maze in search of accident victims.

“We used problem solving, time management and organisation skills. The robot had to be tough and versatile for the competition,” he said. The junior engineers placed second.

Peter was proud and valued the learning experience.
