A group of school friends got the ultimate school drop-off when a team of soldiers took them to class in an iconic military vehicle.

On Thursday morning, a Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle dropped off four students at Stuart Park Primary School to the delight of their classmates who waited kerb side to receive their lucky mates.

As the ‘Bushy’ pulled up, students snapped their best salutes and cheered on as their peers hopped out the back to a round of applause.

In the 20 minutes that followed, the rest of the class got to climb into the steel beast, pop their heads out of the cupola, and try on some kit, including helmets and body armour.

The four lucky boys showed off some of the parting gifts they had been left with – cam cream and ration packs.

The special visit was thanks to a generous donation made by parent Nigel Sharp, who put $500 towards the Hot100 Darwin Mix 104.9 Camp Quality Radio Auction.

For his generous donation, the Gunners of 8/12 Regiment provided Mr Sharp’s son, Archie, and three of his mates an exclusive tour of Robertson Barracks followed by the PMV ride.

Mr Sharp said the experience would be a fond memory for the four young men.

“We got to look at some weapons, some guns, jump in some trucks, try on some camouflage gear and so forth,” he said.

“Then obviously we had the ride here to meet the other kids (it was) a great day.”

Sergeant Joshua Santaguida said he appreciated the bright impact he and his soldiers had made.

“I was really happy to see how happy they were,” he said.

“If I had this experience when I was a kid I probably would have joined (the Army) earlier.”

With a big year for 1st Brigade almost at an end, Sergeant Santaguida said it was a pleasure to “give back” to the community so near to Christmas.

“It’s great, especially for the kids.”
