Robertson Barracks is opening its gates to the public for the first time in five years, providing locals an opportunity to meet their neighbourhood soldiers and check out the warfighting kit.

On October 20, 2024, 1st Brigade will host its first garrison open day since 2019, with protected mobility vehicles, infantry tactics demonstrations, and military working dogs and more arranged.

First Brigade commander, Brigadier Doug Pashley, said he was excited for the free event.

“We are so thrilled to host the public at Robertson Barracks,” he said.

“This is our community too, and having the opportunity to welcome our neighbours and fellow Territorians into our house, and share with them how passionate we are about the work we do, is something I’m really excited about.”

Before Covid-19 put an end to public events, Robertson Barracks held open days frequently, with civilians invited to walk the lawns of the parade ground each year.

Since pandemic restrictions were lifted, however, only HMAS Coonawarra and RAAF Base Darwin have thrown public events for Territorians - until now.

“My number one goal for our open day is that Territorians walk away from the afternoon feeling more connected to their army in the north,” Brigadier Pashley said.

“I hope they get to meet (our) soldiers, see some exciting displays and demonstrations, have a snag or two and hear our phenomenal band play some classic Aussie pub rock.”

Headquarters will also use the opportunity to try and entice the Territory’s younger audience with its “world-class” military demonstrations.

“It’s going to be pretty hard to walk away from a day like that and not feel inspired - some of the best soldiers in the Army work at Robertson Barracks, and they’re all looking forward to showing off their skills and craft,” he said.

“I’d encourage any young men and women who are curious or inspired, to go and have a yarn with the folks from Defence Force Recruiting who will be on site on the day.”

For families, food trucks and BBQ stations manned by Australian Army cooks will be available, while an inflatable obstacle course has also been arranged to keep the energetic happy.

With a career that has taken him across the country, Brigadier Pashley said he had a special place for Darwin.

“Darwin is the best garrison city in Australia,” he said.

“We’re so lucky to get to soldier in the Territory, and are proud to be Territorians. We’re looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible on the 20th.”

The Robertson Barracks open day will take place on Sunday, October 20, 2024, starting from 11am through to 3pm.
