The body of a 72-year-old woman was found inside a home while a man was taken to hospital after a house fire in Adelaide’s northern suburbs on Thursday morning.

Police and emergency services were called to a house in Broughton Rd, Elizabeth Vale, about 3.45am on Thursday after reports of a large fire.

The property was filled with smoke, with a 54-year-old man from the property taken to the Lyell McEwin Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Firefighters put the fire out and found the body of the woman inside the property.

The man has since been discharged from hospital.

Across the road neighbour, Rob Coleman said the woman, and her son, who The Advertiser understands was her carer, were “lovely” people.

“We only saw them walking the dog last night,” Mr Coleman said.

“They bring us lemons all the time…it’s very, very sad.”

Mr Coleman said he “(couldn’t) imagine” suffering such tragedy especially so close to Christmas and said the son always went out of his way to lend a helping hand.

“He’s such a good bloke,” he said.

“My wife got locked out and he helped her get through the gate.

“They’re good people like that.”

Local resident, Tony was on his morning walk when he found out about the fatal fire.

“At about ten to four this morning I just woke up, (there) was a lot of sirens going and I just looked out the kitchen window and there was firees and ambulances,” he said.

“I’m shocked and I’m pretty sure anybody would be.

“It’s a shame that she didn’t get saved.”

The fire is not believed to be suspicious and investigators will examine the circumstances of the fire.

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner and area appealing for anyone who witnessed the fire to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
