Where celebrities attending COP31 can stay after they step off their private jets

Set the private jets to standby as The Advertiser shores up the celebrity guest list for COP31, helping our eco-friendly A-listers find their way around Adelaide.

For the hordes of environmentally conscious celebrities eager to make their mark at COP31, there would be no better host city than Adelaide.

Just don’t ask them about the carbon emissions their private jets will spew out during the long trip south.

A different dilemma faces ecowarrior Greta Thunberg – she doesn’t fly so would have to sail for about 58 days to reach SA from Sweden.

The Advertiser has already found accommodation for some of the VIPs who have attended (or endured) previous COP conferences and could be included on the guest list.

Those staying in the Hills may need to hire a car – electric of course – and if Jeff Bezos’ private jet or helicopter is out of action he may need to catch the ferry from Kangaroo Island to Adelaide on conference days. We’re sure he won’t mind the commute when he sees the view from the rebuilt Southern Ocean Lodge.

When they’re not busy saving the world at COP, our guests will find some of the world’s best food and wine on their doorstep. Hotspots for our state’s visiting VIPs include Port Willunga’s Star of Greece (where Sting famously sunbaked shirtless), Fugazzi in the city and Penfold’s Magill Estate. And our beautiful Adelaide Botanic Garden will be the perfect place to commune with Mother Nature.

For the rich and famous who want to save the planet by not travelling by car during their stay, Adelaide has options. Handy for making a quick getaway from overzealous autograph hunters, electric scooters are readily available for hire in the CBD. There’s also public transport such as the tram to Glenelg.

And could there be a more appropriate place than SA for discussions about clean energy? We’re at the forefront.

Through the Hydrogen Jobs Plan, the state government plans to establish South Australia as a world leader in renewable hydrogen. Already, 75 per cent of our energy is coming from renewable sources – and we’ve got a target of 100 per cent by 2027.

The state is also home to the original world’s biggest battery, built by Tesla. All up, we’ve got about $20bn of renewable projects in the pipeline.

We’re a global leader in decarbonisation. So, to our high-profile climate-saving friends, we say welcome. Stay a while. We’re sure you’ll love it in SA.
