A large taxi company has been hit with a data breach and hackers have accessed personal customer information.
Taxi service, 13cabs said they discovered the breach on Friday, March 14, after some user accounts on their 13cabs and Silver Service app possibly compromised through “sophisticated, unauthorised and suspicious activity”.
Usernames, phone numbers, addresses were all potentially accessed following the breach, along with accounts where the user was eligible for the Taxi Subsidy Scheme.
“It is likely the unauthorised activity was undertaken using data sourced from the dark web,” said in a public statement to affected customers.
The statement also said that no credit card or bank account information was taken.
The unauthorised activity prompted the company to quickly force a reset of all affected customers.
Cybersecurity specialists were called in to conduct an extensive investigation into the incident and to ensure customer accounts are secured.
The company is also working with technical and legal experts to gauge the entirety of the unauthorised activity, including measures that would help affected customers reduce any damage caused by the breach.
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner was alerted of the incident, and law enforcement agencies are also expected to be notified.
