Seven bike and walking paths across SA to get $4.6m in funding, including $1m for 800m Henley Beach path

A popular Adelaide beach will get a new $1m cycling and walking path – but there’s a reason it’s going to cost so much.

The federal government is forking out $4.6m for seven bicycle and walking paths across South Australia, including $1m to extend a West Lakes path by 800 metres.

Charles Sturt Mayor Angela Evans said the 800m pedestrian and cycle path was the “missing link” to connect a 5.5km path to Henley Beach.

The path will extend from West Lakes to Henley Beach, enabled by an extension running alongside Chambers Street through Don Ferguson Memorial Reserve and connecting to Atkin Street in Henley Beach.

“We’re excited to see this much loved corridor (the Grange Lakes Corridor) continue to grow and benefit our residents for years to come,” Ms Evans said.

Asked to explain the high cost, a spokeswoman for federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said it was more than a path, pointing to a concept plan that included works such as a boardwalk, a rain garden, removing old kerb ramps and adding new kerb ramps.

Charles Sturt Council has been working on the 5.5km path since 2017.

Other receiving funding include:

STREAKYBAY Council will receive $1m to construct a Montgomerie Terrace shared use path from East Terrace to Bay Road, Streaky Bay.

MOUNT BARKER Council will receive more than $977,000 to build a shared path on Bollen Road.

LOXTON WAIKERIE Council will receive more than $1.1m for two projects – the construction of two off-road shared paths, one in Waikerie and Ramco, and the other in Loxton.

TATIARA Council will receive $236,500 for a shared path along Rowney Road and Naracoorte Road.

GAWLER will receive $252,757 to upgrade a Clark Road shared use path connecting to the train station.

Ms King said the federal government was making it easier to get to school, work or local services, without driving in a car.
