Troy Smith learns fate over Bali meth bust

A South Australian father who was busted with methamphetamines in Bali has avoided jail and a $740,000 fine, and will instead spend six months in an Indonesian rehabilitation facility.

Arriving at the Denpasar District Court on Thursday afternoon, Troy Smith was handcuffed as he was escorted by Balinese Police to the courtroom to learn his fate.

Smith, originally from Port Lincoln, was staring down possible life imprisonment after being charged with a number of drug offences, including trafficking charges after local police found methamphetamines in his hotel room.

He was found guilty of violating Article 127 of the Indonesian Drugs Law, which relates to personal drug use.

But on Thursday, Smith was ordered to serve a six-month stint in the Anargya Sober House, an addiction treatment centre in Denpasar.

The judges said that the six month sentence would be reduced by the time Smith has already served behind bars.

Outside court after the sentencing, Smith addressed the media directly for the first time.

“I want to say thank you to my lawyer Sakti,” he said.

“To my beautiful mum and sister, sorry and thank you and to Tracy, whose support and love I lean on every single day.”

The 49-year-old father-of-two had been in Bali for just a week before police swooped on the hotel room he shared with his wife Tracy Smith, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Speaking after the hearing, Smith’s lawyer Ida Bagus Gumilang Galih Sakti said Tracy had been a major support for her husband, but said she hadn’t attended any of the court hearings so he could “focus” on the case.

“Tracy gave him support so he could be strong,” Mr Sakti said.

“(She didn’t come to court) just to make sure Troy only focused on his case. If Tracy appeared during the court with a lot of questions from outside, Troy couldn’t focus.”

There, they discovered a package with 3.15g of methamphetamine stuffed inside a Colgate toothpaste container — a delivery Mr Smith’s lawyers have maintained was unsolicited.

In June, The Advertiser however revealed his trafficking offences had been dropped from the case, meaning Smith would no longer face the maximum life penalty.

During the trial, prosecutors revealed that Mr Smith admitted he had been using methamphetamine since 2020, to curb an alcohol addiction.

It’s alleged he smoked meth from a glass pipe in his hotel room on April 29 at 4pm, before he was arrested the next day at 1pm.

Authorities said Mr Smith’s “politeness during trial”, admission to drug use and the father-of-two’s position as the “backbone of his family” were behind their decision.

Mr Smith, 49, was facing up to 12 years in jail and a fine of 8bn Indonesian Rupiah (AU$741,690) if charged with more serious offences.

Notable “fixer” John McLeod – an Australian security provider who helped orchestrate Schapelle Corby’s release from Kerobokan Prison – is currently in Bali assisting Mr Smith and his family with their case.
