Designs have been revealed for the technical college to be built at Port Augusta, featuring short-term student accommodation.

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport has submitted an application to PlanningSA to develop the Stirling Rd property into The Port Augusta Technical College – a technical college set to operate in association, but separately, to the existing Port Augusta Secondary school.

It will provide a fully integrated program offering vocational training, apprenticeships and SACE completion programs with direct pathways to jobs such as electricians, engineers, boilermakers and gas fitters.

This college is included in the state government’s election commitment to build five technical colleges across SA – including two regional colleges, this college in Port Augusta and one in Mount Gambier as well as three in metropolitan Adelaide at Findon, Tonsley and The Heights, Modbury.

The college will be built on approximately 5800 square metres of land and feature a two-storey building to be used as the college, an associated and ancillary short-term student accommodation and twelve on-site carparking spaces.

The technical college will accommodate a total of 100 students at any one time, including 45 students who will reside in the short-term accommodation for up to five days at any one time.

It will be managed by a maximum of 21 staff at any one time with two staff members residing onsite overnight to perform a supervisory role to border students.

The buildings ground level will accommodate class rooms and communal learning spaces, shared study areas, kitchen and dining facilities and amenities including storage lockers, bathrooms and laundry facilities.

The first floor will accommodate 11 short term accommodation rooms, each including four pod-style bunk beds, desks to support private study, storage lockers and separate wet areas with separate shower and toilet facilities.
