Port Adelaide Football Club will be repping a new sponsor on their guernsey in Saturday’s clash with Geelong as South Australian oil and gas giant Santos has stepped up as a new sponsor.

The prime position on the back of player’s guernseys was once owned by major sponsor, GFG Alliance, but was removed after the business went into administration earlier this year.

GFG was announced as a Port Adelaide joint major partner in 2019, when chairman David Koch said the club “could not be prouder of this partnership” with “an established global alliance” that had “invested significantly in Australia in recent times”.

After failing to meet sponsorship payments, Port Adelaide ended its relationship with GFG and its business owner Sanjeev Gupta in February, leaving the club without a sponsor on the upper-back position of the guernsey for three months.

Koch said at the time that “it didn’t come as a surprise”.

“Not if they’re in administration and we’re a creditor, it won’t be on the guernsey,” Koch said of GFG’s sponsorship.

“We’re trying to work through the logistics of it.”

The Advertiser revealed in March that GFG owed the Port Adelaide Football Club a total of $1.26m.

Santos has revealed that it would be the permanent sponsor of Port Adelaide, securing the empty upper-back position left by GFG.

Until Saturday’s game, Port Adelaide had only shown off sponsor KFC on the lower-back of player’s guernsey’s.
