A large boat storage venue with almost 50 sheds and bays could change the complexion of the picturesque Wirrina Cove, after a more ambitious plan was scaled back in response to objections of local residents.

Public documents detailed a plan to divide the Paradise Drive site, to be named Wirrina Boat Storage, into six blocks of undercover storage units with 37 individual sheds and 10 open storage bays for larger vehicles and trailers.

The large 9233 sqm site at Wirrina, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, would be unstaffed and open to customers 24/7 through fob or keypad access.

A previous plan for the site, released for public feedback in January 2024, proposed a boat maintenance workshop and wash-down facilities.

These elements were removed from the present plan after 13 residents raised objections relating to noise, environmental impacts and the proposal’s industrial nature.

Two of the objectors, husband and wife Trevor Gadd and Sally Wiadrowski, said the new plan was “a lot better” after alleviating “a lot of our concerns”, but they still had reservations.

The couple live at Wirrina Cove, overlooking the marina where they lease a berth.

“We are sort of worried that it’s going to be a shed city that might just get abandoned if it doesn’t work business-wise,” Ms Wiadrowski said.

“We can’t really see how we can object to it (through the planning process), because it’s more or less just the NIMBY syndrome. That’s what the zoning is, and I don’t think that they’re going to change that.”

In a statement on behalf of Wirrina Boat Storage, planning consultant Ben Green said the developer intended to create a long-term, sustainable venue.

“The facility addresses a clear need in the area for reliable and secure storage for boat owners,” he said.

“The vision is to provide secure, accessible boat storage in a low-impact, well-managed environment.”
