In a trying, turbulent and trouble-plagued year, the Port Adelaide Football Club’s success was a shining light.

The Power’s fast, daring and creative game style propelled the team to the top of the ladder throughout the AFL’s minor round.

The dream of a premiership in this anniversary year enlivened supporters and was a beacon of hope for many South Australians during the coronavirus pandemic.

Even some Adelaide Crows supporters got behind Port against reigning premiers Richmond in Friday night’s preliminary final at Adelaide Oval, hoping for SA success.

Port fought bravely, with leaders like Tom Jonas and Travis Boak once again complementing young guns like Connor Rozee and Xavier Duursma. Agonisingly, though, the Power fell a goal short of a Grand Final berth.

Fans and players alike are, understandably, smarting from the loss.

But captain Jonas rightly pointed to the Power’s blend of youth and experience, enabling the team to play consistent, high-quality football.

As Jonas said, this gives Port every opportunity to challenge for the flag again next year.
