The $40m upgrade to the key intersection in Mount Barker will include a new, dual lane roundabout at the intersection of Adelaide Rd, Alexandrina Rd, Wellington Rd and Flaxeley Rd.

Adelaide and Flaxley roads will receive new signalled pedestrian crossings and the roundabout will also include new shared use paths and road lighting.

About 31,000 vehicles travel through the Adelaide Rd intersection daily, with this number set to increase as development continues in Mt Barker.

The intersection has long been a safety concern with Mt Barker High School, businesses and community spaces located in the area.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis said as the population in the Adelaide Hills grows “so too are the challenges for transport infrastructure”.

“This upgrade at one of Mt Barker’s busiest intersections is an important one for the local community,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“The added capacity achieved by this two-lane roundabout will cater for the anticipated increase in local traffic in coming years.”

The design was informed by feedback from 250 locals.

Construction is planned to start in 2025 and is set to be completed in mid-2026.

It will support about 170 full-time jobs per year over the life of the project.

The Mt Barker interchange has been the site of 16 crashes involving casualties between 2019 and 2023.

The existing Verdun Interchange will be upgraded to allow access to and from the South Eastern Freeway in both directions.

It will feature an eastbound entry ramp towards Mt Barker and a new westbound exit ramp which will cross the existing ramp and connect with a new roundabout at Mt Barker Rd adjacent to Silver Rd.

The total cost of the two interchange projects, totalling $150m will be funded by an $120m federal government commitment, with the state government covering $30m.
