A young netballer who was hit by a truck outside Marryatville High School remains in a serious condition in hospital, as her devastated family calls for an urgent safety review of the pedestrian crossing.

Amity Nield, 16, and a friend, a 16-year-old boy, were crossing Kensington Rd on their way to school on Wednesday morning, when they were struck by a truck which allegedly drove through a red light.

A third pupil pulled back at the last moment and narrowly missed being hit.

The pair are still in Royal Adelaide Hospital, with Amity’s injuries understood to include a broken collarbone and jaw. The teenage boy remains in a critical condition.

Amity’s father, Simon Nield, told 7NEWS on Thursday morning that his daughter was “doing OK considering what she’s been through”, and was expected to survive the crash.

A passionate sportswoman and a member of the school’s SRC, classmates described Amity as “really kind” and said she often helped others with their schoolwork.

Mr Nield was back at the pedestrian crossing at first light on Thursday morning to survey the scene of the horror incident and retrace their footsteps.

He’s called for an urgent safety upgrade of the pedestrian crossing, 7NEWS reports. It’s understood he’s also contacted the local council regarding a tree branch that appeared to be blocking one of the lights and a “twisted sign”.

Mr Nield was “very, very emotional” when discussing Amity’s accident, and was “extremely concerned” about the condition of his daughter’s friend.

Dashcam footage captured the moments before the horror unfolded on Kensington Rd, showing the three students stepping into the crossing before the truck runs the light.

Video shows that the light was red for at least four seconds before the truck entered the crossing.

Several other students witnessed the shocking crash and can be seeing rushing for help after the teenagers were struck.

The truck driver, a 60-year-old man, was charged with two counts of causing injury by dangerous driving and bailed to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on June 7.

SA Police Superintendent Narelle Kameniar said there was “no reason” why traffic lights at the crossing should not have been seen by the driver.

“It takes a split second in decision-making and this is where we end up,” she said.

“There are certain things that will never leave someone’s mind – and seeing something as horrendous as what happened this morning is one of those things.”
