A popular outdoor pool in the southern suburbs has shut until the weekend, after growing fears of a contagious health illness.

The Marion Outdoor Pool has been closed to the public for two days, after a visitor attended the pool while they had symptoms of cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidiosis is a disease caused by a microscopic germ (parasite), that lives in water, food, soil and causes watery diarrhoea, according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Marion Council issued the alert after following advice from SA Health, while reassuring the public that the person had not contracted it from the facility.

“While the risk to most visitors is low, we are taking immediate precautionary action and treating all pools to ensure the highest safety standards.”

The council urged the public to contact a doctor - and avoid swimming in public pools - if they have symptoms such as diarrhoea, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

The pool will reopen on Saturday March 22.
