Hollywood star Zac Efron has finally been spotted around Adelaide – and it was enough to leave starstruck fans on the verge of tears.

Almost a week after he arrived in town to shoot his new SA film, Gold, Efron popped into city bar Cry Baby on Thursday morning for a quiet drink with some of the cast and crew.

Adelaide student Annabel Renfrey, 20, admitted she didn’t notice the bearded actor when he walked in about midnight, and didn’t believe it when the bartender told her it was the High School Musical star.

“She just looked at me with teary eyes and said, no, they called ahead today, that’s really him,” Ms Renfrey said.

“Then I had a proper look at his face and silently freaked out.”

Ms Renfrey managed to take a couple of videos of Efron at the bar before he moved to a booth with his crew.

“Later he walked past us and so I took my chance and said hello … and he said, ‘Hey how are you? What’s your name? How’s your night going?’” she said.

“Then he went back to his seat. He was so lovely, he couldn't have been nicer.”

Another fan said Efron was able to keep a low profile for the majority of his two-hour stay at the bar.

“He seemed to be having a good time, we were all a bit starstruck,” the patron said.

Efron touched down at Adelaide Airport on Friday afternoon, making a low key entrance with a friend following their flight from the Gold Coast.

Efron, who’s been living in Byron Bay with girlfriend, Australian model Vanessa Valladares, has signed on to star in Stan original movie Gold, which will start shooting in remote SA regions starting later this month.

The popular actor will feature alongside Anthony Hayes and award-winning actor Susie Porter, while Hayes will also direct the film, which is based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Polly Smyth.

Gold is a taut thriller about greed and the lengths people will go to secure themselves a fortune. It follows two drifters travelling through the outback who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found.

Efron was last in Adelaide in 2012, for a local premiere of his film, The Lucky One, directed by SA filmmaker Scott Hicks.
