Friends create fundraiser for 11-year-old Rhyle Abiado who was hit by a train at Evanston Gardens

As 11-year-old Rhyle Abiado continues to fight for his life after being hit by a train at Evanston Gardens, a friend has created a fundraiser to support the family in their time of need.

A friend of a boy hit by a train at Evanston Gardens is raising funds to support the 11-year-old’s family as he continues to fight for his life in hospital.

Organiser Iris Egel of Wynn Vale created the campaign for the family of Rhyle Abiado, listing the boy’s mother Lucila Abiado as the beneficiary.

The GoFundMe page explains how tragedy struck the family of four last week, and Rhyle remains in the ICU.

“As I am writing this message I just got a call stating that Rhyle’s condition is not looking good at the moment,” she said.

She said she hopes the fundraiser will “help out with their bills and daily expenses”.

Emergency services were called to Tambelin Railway Station at Evanston Gardens around 8.15am on February 28.

In a communication to parents that day, Head of Trinity College Nick Hately said the year 7 student was struck at a crossing.

“The incident occurred before school and a number of Trinity students and staff witnessed this event,” Mr Hately said.

Mr Hately also called for safety upgrades including a pedestrian safety barrier.

The incident, alongside another horror train crash, has sparked a review of Adelaide’s railway network.

Last week, Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis confirmed “all of our crossings meet every single national safety standard”, but a review has been launched and “everything is on the table”.

“We are considering whether or not we actually put people at some of these crossings that are used more frequently during peak hours,” he said.

“We are considering whether we have a program of managed gates … we are considering whether there be more signage … do we have a limit of the number of crossings?”
