Does alcohol make us violent?

A drugged up thug left a female club promoter unconscious in a sickening act of violence on Hindley Street.

However, Emilio James Pomery, 30, will be eligible for parole next month after he left the woman too frightened to continue working at the venue.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Pomery was affected by drugs and behaving aggressively on February 14, 2022 while in Hindley St, Adelaide.

Chelsea Czopek was working as a promoter at a venue in Hindley Street when Pomery approached her while she was with Daniel Tran.

“You started to become threatening and began pointing your finger at them,” Judge Paul Muscat said.

“You then asserted ‘I’m an Afghan, which means I am from a warrior lineage and know boxing and will knock you the f*** out’.”

Mr Tran asked Pomery to leave them alone, but he said that he had to shake his hand or he would hit Ms Czopek.

“She responded by replying ‘You are going to hit me? Are you going to hit a girl?’,” Judge Muscat said.

“Ms Czopek then decided to use her phone to film you and moved in front of you.

“You knocked the phone out of her hands, and then elbowed her to the face rendering her unconscious.”

The court heard Ms Czopek’s next memory was awakening at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

She required two stitches to her lip and the brackets of her dental braces were broken.

Pomery, of Salisbury North, pleaded guilty to causing harm with intent.

In her victim impact statement, Ms Czopek said she was unable to continue working because she became too frightened of everyone and everything.

“(This is) an example of unprovoked drug-fuelled violence along a nightclub strip in front of many members of the public, which unfortunately is now all too common,” Judge Muscat said.

“Your behaviour that night also needs to be publicly denounced.”

The court heard Pomery, who has a very lengthy criminal history of violence, wanted to stay away from drugs and crime when released from jail.

“You want to be someone that you are supposed to be and not this other person, this so-called wannabe,” Judge Muscat said.

He sentenced Pomery to three years jail, with a non-parole period of one year and eight months.

The sentence was backdated to May 17, 2023, meaning Pomery will be eligible for parole mid next month.
