Young and dumb: SA's immature criminals exposed

A drug courier caught with over $100,000 of pills was trying to square up his debt with his dealer, a court heard.

Jack Biddle, 21, was given a stern warning from a judge to stay off drugs after he narrowly avoided jail for the huge stash.

During sentencing, the District Court heard police observed a vehicle speeding away from a Brahma Lodge service station on July 25, last year.

The vehicle which matched the description of a stolen vehicle was pursued by police and pulled over.

Biddle, who was the front passenger, gave police a false name and started to walk away.

He threw an object which contained 2168 tablets of N-Dimethylpentylone, worth up to $108,000.

Forensic SA described the substance as a synthetic cathinone which was designed to mimic the effect of MDMA.

Biddle, of Hewett, pleaded guilty to large commercial drug trafficking

The court heard Biddle, who had been using an average of 1g of cocaine a day, had run up a $1500 debt in the leadup to the offending.

“Your dealer told you that by delivering the package to a pre-designated address, the debt that you owed would be extinguished and, in addition, you would receive $1000 in cash,” Judge Joanne Tracey said.

Judge Tracey said drugs carried a significant risk of harm to the community.

“The drug is reported to achieve a more potent but shorter-lasting effect than MDMA, and this puts users of the drug at a higher risk of an accidental overdose,” she said.

“The role of a courier is an important one in any drug trafficking enterprise.”

Judge Tracey sentenced Biddle to three years and eight months jail, with a non-parole period of two years.

Due to his young age and rehabilitation steps, the sentence was suspended on a three year good behaviour bond.

Judge Tracey warned him that he breached any conditions of the bond or continued to offend he would go to jail.

“Your age won’t cut it anymore,” she said.

“You need to find new friends and you need to move on from this. Stop taking drugs.”
