Construction to begin at $25m Mawson Lakes defence hub called Base, developed by Leyton Property and Foundry Projects

Suppliers for global defence giants are snapping up “hi-tech” buildings at a huge site north of Adelaide before construction starts next month.

Works starting next month will transform an empty field in Adelaide’s northern suburbs into a $25m defence industry hub comprising 22 “hi-tech” buildings.

Leyton Property and Foundry Projects are developing the site, named Base, at Mawson Lakes’ sprawling 65ha Adelaide Technology Park.

Plans approved this month by Salisbury Council said the tenants were expected to be in the defence industry and small-scale manufacturing was proposed, including the assembly of computer parts and manufacturing of specialised defence equipment.

Leyton Property managing director Hamish Brown said the units catered to a demand among smaller component manufacturers supplying large defence companies based at Adelaide Technology Park.

“If you are doing work for Lockheed Martin on a certain defence project, being located directly next door or 100m down the road is a really big competitive advantage,” he said.

“It’s very much hi-tech and clean manufacturing, as opposed to what we typically think of manufacturing as being like – this is a sophisticated laboratory-type space.”

The precinct houses more than 100 companies across defence, aerospace, electronics and other industries, including Raytheon, Saab Australia, Lockheed Martin and Codan.

The developers said more than a third of units had already been bought, and works at the 8199sq m site, expected to finish in May, would create 100 construction jobs.

Hamish Brown’s brother, Tom Brown, is the founding director at Foundry Projects.

Playford Council last week granted planning consent for Leyton Property, along with Roger and JP Drake of Drakes Supermarkets, to build a $20m fast food hub at Edinburgh North.
