They were once affectionately nicknamed the “tree huggers” but the Australian Greens have been caught out nailing federal election posters to trees in the eastern suburbs.
Two plastic posters from the environmentally-focused party were spotted wrapped around and attached to separate trees in the garden of a pre-polling booth on the corner of Portrush Road and Fisher Street.
Posters from other parties were tied to the same trees.
The minor party’s posters featured the slogan: “Change is Possible. Keep Dutton out and get Labor to act”.
Several experts, including business Aussie Tree Solutions, say that hanging items from trees using screws or nails can cause harm – even if they only pierce the bark.
“When a tree’s bark is penetrated, it is exposed to disease and insect infestation, so screwing nails into a tree will leave it open to risk,” their website says.
The Advertiser has reached out to the Greens for comment.
It comes as a right wing activist from Melbourne has been issued with a cease and desist statement from the Australian Electoral Commission for putting up illegal election posters around the country, including in Adelaide’s highly marginal seat of Boothby.
The AEC say they have asked Morgan Jonas to stop distributing corflutes and signs, which attack a political party and parliamentary members from that party.
The campaign material is only “partially authorised” and does not include the full name and street address of Mr Morgan, who founded the Freedom Party of Victoria.
The corflutes and signs have reportedly been displayed in at least four states including Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, along with the seat of Boothby in SA.
