A young thug drove his Ute at two men in retaliation after a group fight broke out in a Foodworks car park.

Ahmad Hamijo, 21, escaped jail after he resorted to the violent act because he believed his family’s honour had been disrespected.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Hamijo’s group had a confrontation with another group in May 2023.

“The nightclub confrontation culminated in both groups agreeing to meet in the Foodworks car park in North Adelaide where there was a group fight,” Judge Paul Muscat said.

“I was told that, during the lead-up to the fight, words that were grossly offensive in your culture as a Syrian were used by one member of the other group.”

“These utterances included a highly derogatory reference about your mother and disgraceful threats against her.”

The court heard Hamijo felt his family’s dignity and honour had been disrespected and required redress.

“You got into your Mitsubishi Triton Ute and drove at the person who had been abusive,” Judge Muscat said.

“In the process, you crashed into his car.

“Two men were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being seriously injured.”

The court heard Hamijo struck one of the men, which caused a cut to his skull that required stitches.

Hamijo pleaded guilty to two counts of creating a risk of serious harm.

Judge Muscat said it was extremely fortunate that the consequences were only limited to damage and minor harm.

The court heard Hamijo had previously been sentenced to a suspended sentence in January 2024, for an “outrageous” road rage incident.

The court heard Hamijo, a new father, was recently the victim of an attempted carjacking where he was attacked with a machete and shot in the leg.

He was sentenced to two years and one month jail, with a non-parole period of 14 months.

“It is clear to me that you are quick to resort to violence in certain circumstances, which means that you pose a risk to the safety of the community,” Judge Muscat said.

“While the victims were part of a group that clearly wanted to sort out the issues through violence that does not excuse your actions.”

Due to Hamijo’s youth and personal circumstances, the sentence was suspended on a $2000, three year good behaviour bond.

He was also disqualified from driving for five years.
