Adelaide weather: Rain and possible thunderstorms to hit SA on Tuesday

Driving rain is sweeping South Australia with the state forecast to receive more unseasonal weather towards the end of the week. See how much has fallen so far.

Weather To Watch

The long weekend sunny skies were short lived with rain falling over most of South Australia overnight.

The west of state has been hit the hardest with Ceduna reporting 12mm from 9am Monday to 6am Tuesday.

Adelaide has received 3.3m since 9am Monday, with the wet weather system to move south towards Victor Harbor and Mt Gambier later in the morning.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson told ABC Radio Adelaide the rain had been relatively light, but steady.

“The rain is due to a low pressure system moving across from the west of the state,” the spokesperson said.

“The cloud band is going to be with us for a while today, so I think you’ll see rain periods on and off.”

The bulk of the downpour will likely hit Tuesday morning and carry through to the afternoon, with 10 to 15mm expected in Adelaide.

A possible thunderstorm is also forecast for the city and metropolitan area.

There is also a chance of a thunderstorm in Ceduna and Victor Harbor with Port Augusta warned of a more severe storm.

The weather event is causing temperatures to drop slightly with Adelaide forecast to reach 20C on Tuesday, following a top of 23.6 at 3.30pm on Monday.

Looking ahead, temperatures will rise slightly before another cold front is expected from Thursday evening, seeing a return to cooler temperatures towards the end of the week.

The State Emergency Service issued a flood advice message on Monday afternoon for the Flinders District.

The warning indicated the district is at risk of potential flash flooding over the next two days due to isolated heavy falls.

Locals are being advised to prepare for flooding, move valuable items to a safe place and ensure drains and gutters are clear if safe to do so.
