A contentious art gallery – set to be located right in the heart of Alice Springs – will be built by a Northern Territory company after the government awarded the tender for the project.

Territory-based Sitzler will build the National Aboriginal Art Gallery, now set to be named the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery of Australia after the government awarded the tender to the company on Friday, June 7.

Works are set to begin on the project in the coming weeks, according to Minister for Arts Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech.

“The gallery will be a vibrant community hub that will generate many jobs during the construction phase as well as ongoing employment and business opportunities well into the future,” he said.

“This project will drive tourism and promote the Territory Labor Government’s social and economic objectives, and today’s announcement progresses this project to the next level.”

Sitzler director Michael Sitzler said as an Alice Springs local he was excited to be a part of the project.

“Sitzler will maximise Alice Springs and Territory business participation in the construction of the facility, creating something that we, and our children, can all be proud of,” he said.

The gallery is set to be built on Anzac Oval in Alice Springs, with the goalposts already down at the oval.

Local rugby clubs have been left without an oval to play on in the wake of the gallery’s construction, which is set to be completed in 2027.

New aritst impressions of the gallery have been released.
