NT SENATOR Malarndirri McCarthy has called on National Cabinet to address the high rates of incarceration of Aboriginal people and Aboriginal deaths in custody.
Senator McCarthy said it was frustrating the nation’s leaders chose to take decisive action on COVID-19, but not on issues of racism.

“How is it we cannot deal with this issue which as been going on for over three decades?” she said.
“We can be a better country. We can search and strive to be the better part of our selves and we are doing that with COVID-19,” she said.
“I called on the Prime Minister and Senator Cormann to enable this issue to be part of the National Cabinet.”
She commended people who had taken to the streets to protest on the weekend, saying they felt like “they are not being heard.”

“It’s the First Nations Land Councils that have led the way in protecting First Nations people. The organisers of these rallies have worked in conjunction with those health organisations,” she said.
“I believe that this is about change, real change and change has to come about through some kind of pain.”
