Search under way for Victorian hiker Alistair Thomson who went missing last week near Alice Springs

Police and rangers are currently near Alice Springs, tracing the last known whereabouts of an “experienced hiker” from Victoria who went missing last week after embarking on a solo journey.

Search crews have been dispatched to find a bushwalker who has been missing for more than a week in Central Australia.

Sixty three-year-old Victorian man Alistair Thomson embarked on a solo journey across the Larapinta Trail on May 13, heading toward Alice Springs from about 240km west of the town according to NT Police.

Described as an “experienced hiker with plenty of food and water”, Mr Thomson’s last contact with friends and family came through a text message Tuesday last week.

He said he planned to be at Hugh Gorge by that following Wednesday, May 22.

Since then, no one has been able to reach him and he has not checked back into his hotel.

Police are currently searching for Mr Thomson with help of the Larapinta Trail Trek Support Team and local ranger groups.

The missing man is described as six foot tall, fair skinned, with light brown to greying hair and wearing a blue broadbrimmed hat.

Police said they were concerned for his welfare and asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact 131 444.

Nearby tourist hot spots such as Simpson Gap and Standley Chasm – which the Larapinta Trail runs through – are part of the search zone.

A series of walkers on the Larapinta Trail at Simpson’s Gap said they were unaware anyone was missing, but noted that they had seen a fair few walkers coming and going down the trail and a chopper fly over them.

Standley Chasm park management said that NT Parks rangers had been through searching for the man.

The park management said they were still reviewing their CCTV footage and records and were assisting NT Parks with their search.
