Road closures and croc traps for flood impacted region

Sections of the Victoria Highway and Buntine Highway remain closed due to flooding, and croc traps have been installed after sightings near a NT creek.

Sections of the Victoria Highway and Buntine Highway remained closed due to flooding through to Timber Creek and Kununurra across to the Western Australia border.

Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES) on Tuesday reminded motorists of the dangers of driving through flood waters and also of the potential danger of crocodiles that make their way into flooded areas.

A crocodile trap was placed near Timber Creek after reports of crocs travelling through flood waters in the area, with the NTES asking people to be “croc wise”.

NTES incident controller Matt Hollamby said that motorists need to avoid the area and not ignore closed roads.

“We are urging travellers to be aware of flooded roads in many areas of the Top End due to heavy rain and rising waters over roads,” he said.

“It is highly dangerous for vehicles to attempt to cross flooded roads and causeways.

“Traffic signs and road blocks are in place and police will be frequently patrolling the area, anyone travelling along closed roads can expect to be penalised. Emergency services do not want to have to conduct search and rescues along roads that are clearly closed.

“Always stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways and never drive into floodwaters. Remember; if it’s flooded, forget it.”
