A man who was behind the wheel of a car involved in a head-on crash north of Brisbane at the weekend says he and his partner are “lucky to be alive”.

Nigel and Caryn were on their way to their workshop in Brendale when they were involved in a head-on crash at Winn Rd, Mount Samson, just before 1pm on February 8.

“As we started to crest a small hill with a bend to the right ….. an oncoming car had already crossed the centre line by half a car width and within a split second the car was totally in our lane heading straight for us just metres away,” Nigel alleged on social media.

“I had zero time to change the situation ... pure instinctive swerve left action engaged and braced for imminent impact.”

Police investigations in to the crash are continuing.

Nigel said he couldn’t believe the situation he was in at the time.

“l never lost consciousness and my only thoughts were ‘WTF this can’t be happening’,” he said.

“He (the other driver) was trapped in the car and had to be cut out ... he was in a very bad way.”

The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 20s, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He remians at the hospital in a stable condition.

Both Nigel and Caryn were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’ Hospital in stable condition, but the full extent of their injuries has now been revealed.

“Caryn has seven broken ribs, black and blue legs and arms, I have a broken hip and broken both right lower leg bones,” Nigel said.

Nigel has thanked those who helped in the aftermath of the crash.

“I would like to thank all the fantastic services and community minded people that gave their time to help strangers in need and to the dozens of dedicated people here at the RBWH,” Nigel said.

“I’m lucky to be alive.”

A friend of the couple Justin Green, who started a GoFundMe fundraiser to support the couple, said the crash would “affect them immensely”.

“This is a terrible thing to happen to some really great people who have helped so many people in the community for a very long time,” he said.

“They are always the first to lend a hand.”
