THE federal Attorney-General is refusing to budge on the Commonwealth-imposed ban on Territories deciding for themselves if they want euthanasia to become legal, despite a growing push for the government to make it happen.
It comes as the NT’s one representative in the Coalition government accepts she’s facing “significant” roadblocks in convincing colleagues to support the Territory’s right to choose.
The NT News is standing firm in its push for the Commonwealth to scrap the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997, which strips Territorian’s rights to vote on the matter.

Attorney-General Christian Porter’s office, in a statement, for the third time in as many months said there were “no plans to introduce legislation” to repeal the laws.
This despite bipartisan support from NT federal politicians and the NT Legislative Assembly to make it happen.
CLP Senator Sam McMahon agreed that she could technically “walk into the Attorney-General’s office and ask him about it” but it would be to no avail if she could not secure the numbers within the party to vote on a change.

“If I don’t have the support … I won’t have a chance,” she said.
Senator McMahon said she had “some hope” that she could do it.
“If I can convince people that what they are voting for is the Territory’s right to decide … then I do think I have got a chance,” she said.
“And I’m willing to give it a chance.”
