Explained: The right to die in Australia

WHY should 240,000 Territorians not be allowed the same rights as more than 97 per cent of Australians when it comes to legalising voluntary euthanasia?

It’s a question that Territorians have been grappling with for 24 years since the federal government cruelly introduced a law that voided Northern Territory laws allowing voluntary euthanasia in 1995.

The issue has been front and centre in other states in recent years and Victoria and Western Australia now allow voluntary euthanasia.

Queensland is close to following suit and other states may follow in the months and years ahead.

These states have introduced laws because it is the right thing to do and they have listened to their people.

What is so cruel for Territorians is that our parliament cannot even debate introducing voluntary euthanasia because, under the Commonwealth Euthanasia Laws Act 1997, we are legally not allowed to.

As we have stated today, the NT News is taking a stand and saying enough’s enough.

It is beyond time for the rights of the Northern Territory to be restored so we can debate and ultimately reintroduce voluntary euthanasia.

It is clear through our readers that an overwhelming majority of Territorians want this change to occur.

Our campaign will heap pressure on federal politicians to do the right thing, repeal its outdated law and restore the rights of Territorians.
