Police have confirmed a 19-year-old man has died following a horror crash near the Batchelor Rd turn-off on Sunday as investigations into the smash continue.

Major crash detectives said investigators had determined a silver Subaru SUV travelling northbound on the Stuart Hwy had lost control and drifted into the oncoming lanes, colliding with a southbound Mazda ute.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said a witness had stopped to help but the Subaru’s teenage driver was declared deceased at the scene.

“Due to the collision impact, the Forester was torn in two and consequently the driver was ejected from the vehicle,” he said.

An 82-year-old woman, who was driving the Mazda ute, was treated at the scene by St John Ambulance before being taken to Royal Darwin Hospital via CareFlight.

A section of the major highway was shut for the remainder of the day while detectives examined the scene and the road was reopened later that night.

Sgt Lindner said tragically, the number of lives lost on Territory roads traditionally rose during the festive season.

“It saddens us to deliver such devastating news to a family at this time of year,” he said.

Sgt Lindner urged anyone who witnessed the incident but had not yet spoken to police to contact them on 131 444.

A report will now be prepared for the Coroner.

Meanwhile, an investigation into a fatal crash in the East Arnhem Region in September has been finalised, with the incident now officially classed as a road death, bringing the Territory’s toll to 50 for the year.

Earlier, emergency services responded to the two-vehicle crash near the Batchelor Rd intersection in Coomalie Creek just after noon on Sunday.

One person died at the scene, NT Police confirmed.

An elderly woman was airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital.
